There is more to this writing lark than I thought
I’ve been collecting useful articles, blog posts and blogs about writing. Some great insights, warnings and encouragement contained in them, and leads to yet more info.
What surprised me though is, while there are core challenges people face, there are things I had not considered at all.
This is causing more resistance.
Maybe I would have made more progress had I not tried to find this advice?
So the analysis paralysis continues. Better equipped, but more delayed.
Stuff only nerds have to consider
My genre is (is going to be?) science fantasy. Not necessarily science fiction in the Arthur C Clarke/Asimov style, more like Doctor Who (who is essentially a wizard in space/time). Also with traditional sword and magic Fantasy too. I am kind of going for a fusion, and like fusion cuisine, it might well not to be to anyone’s tastes.
The advice I am getting, though, is this genre is hard. For a start, just magic systems are tough.
This lunch break I read Brandon Sanderson’s advice on magic systems. Check these bad boys out:
I’m also learning that I need to avoid formulaic “beats” … while others are saying I should stick to tried and true beats (not by Dre) … either way I need to use beats (once I work out what the heck beats are) … no wonder so many writers give up.
Perhaps I should have chosen something easier instead, but I will plow on.
